首届“21世纪•麦格劳-希尔杯”全国英语教师写作大赛参赛作品
谢菲菲,中学组特等奖
In a twinkle of an eye, three years have passed since I became an English teacher. Looking back, I have experienced pleasure, success as well as confusion and sadness.
I am from Sanlitun No.1 Middle School located in Chaoyang district of Beijing. As a young English teacher, I have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. I remember when I first steeped on my platform to give lessons to my students, filled with enthusiasm and passion, some of the students always looked so tired and sleepy. After that when I spent much of my time preparing for my lessons and trying my best to make my lessons vivid and interesting, the teaching effect and feedback were still not that I had expected. Moreover, when I was eager to teach them all that I have learned, their abilities of English were still mediocre. So at that time, I think life was frustrating and I felt very confused, tired and I even wanted to give up the job of being and English teacher.
Fortunately, when I read a passage on a magazine, I found the truth to make my life 100%. Now I would like to share it with you.
Let's do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! As we all know, there are 26 alphabets in English---from A to Z. Against them we have the numbers---from 1% to 26%. If A is equal to 1%, and B to 2%, and so on, until Z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? That is to say, what can make our life perfect? Some of you may suggest "Money". However, after calculating, you'll find it only comes to 72%. Now let's try a few more. Knowledge? Yes, knowledge is power! But this time it only comes to 96%. How about love? That only shows at 54%. Luck does even worse, only at 47%, though most of us think this is the most important. Then what on earth can make life 100%? No matter how difficult a problem is, we can solve it only if we change our attitude. Yes! Only ATTITUDE comes out at 100%.
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Therefore, attitude is the thing that shapes who you are the most. Life is what we make it, always has been, and always will be.
After reading the article, I knew that being anxious is not an effective way in solving the problem and complaint was worthless either. So from then on, I made a decision to be a good and successful teacher. I tried my best to find a role among students. I've learned to be the students' teacher, their elder sister, their friend and even their mother. I showed my care and love for them. Whenever they were in trouble, being sick, feeling blue or in a bad mood, I would be the person that talked to them, took care of them or tried to help them. I also respected and trusted them. When they fell in love with someone, quarreled with friends, could not get along well with parents, I would analyze the pros and cons and gave them some opinions or suggestions. Besides that, I tried my best to understand them. When they broke the rules or did something wrong carelessly, I would help them out of trouble instead of scolding them. After doing that, they accepted me at last, and the interest in learning English came to them naturally.
I owe this success to my attitude changing.
This is my fourth year of teaching, and in this year, I got a big challenge. That is to teach students in our new school campus. There are two extremes in my new school campus. About 40% of the students are from other provinces, whose parents have good jobs in Beijing or even win their own business here. They are always very rich. Actually they study at the school on a temporary basis, so some of the children in such families turned out to be slow in their lessons. They seem to have everything but the motivation of learning. However, about 60% of the students are from working class families in the residence or villages near by, whose parents have low educational level and limited income. Even worse, some of them lose their jobs. Sometimes when I visited these students at home I noticed that a certain proportion of their living standards are very critical. Some even don't have a good study environment to finish their homework. No wonder they always find excuses not to finish their homework. And according to a recent exam result, there are 40% students struggling to get a pass in the English learning. That's really a big challenge for me.
However, now, knowing the importance of attitude, I just want to say one sentence to myself, "if there were no cloud, would the sky feel lonely?" So I believe I can overcome any difficulty I met or will meet. I am ready to face all the challenges and troubles positively and bravely.
An English teacher is a very ordinary post, but there are so many English teachers dedicating to it silently and selflessly. I am proud to be one of them and I am proud to dedicate all my life to my beloved career of English teaching. And from what my experience, our attitude is the key to motivate our students! Attitude is everything. Now, my dear friends, please give the world a sunshine smile. Change your attitude and enjoy every minute in your teaching life!
