Dear Chris,
How are you? I’m writing to give you the information you asked for about the day trip to London. I’m glad you’re thinking of coming with us. It’s going to be a great day out.
Firstly, you should know that we are meeting at 6 am at the railway station. You will need 30 for the train ticket and 10 for the theatre ticket.
Secondly, you wanted to know what time we would get home. Well, we hope to be back home by 11 pm.
Finally, if you decide that you definitely want to join us, you must phone Mr Copley by Thursday to book a place. His phone number is 01204 697361.
I hope these plans suit you and it would be great if we could go to London together. Write soon and let me know what you decide.

Yours,

Li Hua

B One possible version:
What Makes a Good Friend?
Everyone makes friends, and nearly everyone has a good friend. What makes a good friend?
Firstly, I think a good friend should be someone who has a lot in common with you. You can share your ideas with him or her. Secondly, a good friend should be there for you all the time, not just when he or she wants to be, and he or she should keep in touch with you even though you may be far apart. Thirdly, a good friend is someone who listens to you but, at the same time, doesn’t just agree with everything you say. He or she should definitely tell you when you’re making a mistake. Lastly, a good friend should be kind, have a good sense of humour and be able to forgive you easily.

Dear Michael,
Just a short letter to say Hi, and to tell you about a fascinating website I visited recently. It’s called the StudentZone and the address is http://www.studentzone.org.cn. It has information about entertainment, universities, news, hobbies, health and sport.
I know you love surfing the Internet, so I think you’d enjoy exploring the site. It’s well-organised and easy to follow. The information on the NBA is fantastic and you can get updates from it. It also provides information for choosing a suitable university, which could be very useful, since we’re taking the entrance examinations next year.
Well, that’s all for now.
Love,
Li Hua
B) One possible version:
I do not believe that books will be replaced by modern media, such as film, radio, TV and the Internet. Firstly, we have more leisure time than we used to, and people are generally living longer, which means there is more time to read. As well as this, there is the strength of the book as a tradition. We are usually not aware of the role of traditions in our modern world, but they can have a very strong pull on us. Added to this, the book is such a practical tool: it doesn’t cost very much, it is usually small enough to carry around, and it can easily be revisited. In conclusion, we will never go without books, because they have served us so well for so long.
